From a standing start in the 1990s, when almost no tourist visas were issued, the Laos Peoples' Democratic Republic now welcomes more than one million visitors annually. Landlocked, and bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma and China, Laos has long been South East Asia's geographical, political and military buffer zone. Home to six million people, Laos is now a tranquil and peaceful country. It is accessible, welcoming and a fascinating destination. Land borders are opening as the communist government deals with the realism of their situation. For the committed traveller this means that the country is easy to get in and out of, and a logical means of gaining land access to the countries which surround it. There are also daily flights from Bangkok, Hanoi and Phnom Penh; there is no reason not to go to Laos anymore! |
