More than a million people a year now visit Cambodia, many of whom go simply to vist the spectacular Angkor temple complex at Siam Reap. There is more to Cambodia than temples though.

Cambodia is accessible these days, and is a fascinating place. The evidence of the country's troubled past is not hard to find, but the traveller who looks beyond the mildly challenging aspects of the poor infrastructure to engage with the country, and the people, will be rewarded with the experience of a lifetime.

The Khmer people are wonderful, the food experience, given the French influence, is sensational and the history is, uniquely, both new and ancient.

Angkor Wat is not to be missed, but if you find yourself in the capital Phnom Penh be sure to pay your respects at the genocide museum and the killing fields.

Cambodia is still a destination for the determined traveller, but it's well worth the effort when you get there.

There are international flights from the UK to Phnom Penh, notably with KLM / China Airlines and Singapore, and there are also several low cost carriers operating in and out of Cambodia as well if you prefer to book your flights locally.

Land borders between Thailand, Laos,Vietnam and Cambodia are open, but be sure to do some visa research before travelling.
